You Left Me

“Found My Feet” is about growing up loved, gifted, and protected while quietly carrying the pain of being separated from your biological mother and father.

The song lives inside that contradiction.

You had a Mom and Dad in your aunt and uncle who stepped in and raised you, but their love could not automatically answer the questions a child has about the parents who aren't there. Being grateful for who stayed did not erase the hurt caused by who was missing.

You were naturally gifted and excelled at many things, so from the outside you could look like a kid who was doing well. But underneath the ability was anger, confusion, emotional pain, and an attitude that sometimes became the only language you had for feelings you couldn't explain.

Your teachers recognized both sides. They saw the difficult kid, but they also saw what was inside him. Instead of giving up on you, they surrounded you with strong teachers who demanded more from you because they believed there was more in you.

The neighborhood did something similar. You grew up in Southeast Washington, D.C., during a period when the world around you was changing. The community of block parties and neighbors looking after one another increasingly collided with drugs, crack addiction, violence, and bullets. Yet people still knew your name, knew your attitude, corrected you, and fiercely protected you.

So the song isn't simply “my biological parents left me and I survived.” That's too small.

It's about a boy who succeeded loudly while suffering silently.

And it's about finally recognizing, as a grown man, that much of what looked like random survival was actually guidance. Your aunt and uncle. Those strict teachers. The neighbors watching from porches and windows. The people who corrected you instead of abandoning you. The unseen hand that kept directing you toward something beyond what you could see at the time.

That's where the faith layer becomes important. The Creator was present in the people who stayed. You didn't necessarily recognize that while you were living through it. Looking backward, you can see that you were being protected, shaped, disciplined, and guided even while wrestling with abandonment.

And the title “Found My Feet” has several meanings: learning to stand after being left, finding your identity beyond your biological parents, discovering emotional stability after years of hidden pain, and realizing that The Creator had been giving you places to put your feet all along.

The deepest message is:

I thought my story was about the people who weren't there. As I got older, I discovered it was also about all the people The Creator placed there.

 

And now, instead of continuing to run from the unanswered questions, you're finally strong enough to turn around, face them, heal what the successful kid learned to hide, and understand the man that kid eventually became.
